So you are done with university and reality has set in; you are now thinking of how to make money as a fresh graduate in Nigeria. Well, you are not alone; there are thousands of graduates out there too who have no idea of what to do with their time. Unless you are lucky to find a job and start up your life, you might have a hard time trying to figure out how to make money.
The system of education we operate never teaches graduates how to be self-dependent outside the school environment. It has made most graduate consumers instead of producers. I was once in this path, but I will try as much as possible to help out in this post.
Looking for how to make money as a fresh graduate is a very wrong notion; this is because money is gotten only when you’ve solved a problem. In most corrupt cases; once you fill a satiable need, you make MONEY.
Which brings us to the question; “What need can you satisfy”
Once you offer a service, it is likely obvious that you can make money from it. So it is time to paraphrase the question for better understanding.
Instead of asking “How can I make money as a fresh graduate”, you can now ask “What service can I offer as a fresh graduate that would make me money?” Once you are able to figure that out, then this post might be quite irrelevant to you. Till then …
See the 5 Simple ways to make money as a fresh graduate in Nigeria
Start a Handwork
I assume you’ve learnt a couple of things during your university period and the NYSC SAED scheme. If you didn’t, then we need to talk. It clearly shows that you’ve wasted two critical defining periods of your life. All hope isn’t lost either; you can still salvage the situation.
There are simple but yet destiny-changing skills you can learn without a short period of time that would help you make money as a fresh graduate. Most times I suggest ICT skills because it is more in demand in Nigeria than ever before. I listed some ICT skills you can learn that would make you money, so you should consider it.
Once you have learnt, you discover that you become presented with many money-making chances than before. You can then utilize your handwork into something productive.
If you already have a skill, you can immediately start-up something. You really don’t need a large capital to set-up something – no matter how small. You can research how to start a business; it would definitely give you some ideas.
Start an Online Business
This is quite broad, but it is one of the ways you can make money as a fresh graduate. No gimmicks, several online businesses have made a lot of graduates become millionaires without them leaving their houses.
There are several online businesses you can do, but there isn’t anyone for LAZY people. Once you are lazy – probably looking for a money multiplying website, you won’t see any money on the internet.
You have to put in lots of work, time, and energy, to make sure that you succeed in any online business. We have a couple of them that can help you make money as a fresh graduate and they are;
- Amazon Publishing
- E-commerce Sales

Start an Offline Business
It isn’t difficult to start in the real sense; when it comes to starting up a real offline business, there are many options for you. Most of these businesses per say doesn’t require much capital to start up.
For example, I was discussing starting up a real estate agency with a fresh graduate out of school some months back. You won’t believe that this guy currently is making about 7-digits yearly from his sales.
You have to be extremely creative, which is the reason you can think. I can think of so many offline businesses to start, and I already explained some of them in the ways to make money in Nigeria.
- Real Estate Consulting
- Becoming a Middle Man
- Delivering goods for people
- Starting a strategic business
- Buying and Reselling
All of the above businesses are profitable, but you have to know exactly what you want to do and go for it.
Get a Low Paying Job Fast
Here goes the easy way out for people who aren’t interested in stressing themselves. You can just apply for a low paying job with less competition and get the job immediately. There is no guarantee that you’d be given the job, but the chances are high.
Once you get the job, you use your proceeds to acquire more skills and improve yourself. Hopefully, you would surely find a better one when the time comes – I pray it really comes. Naturally, I am not a fan of job hunting. I prefer working my own hours and making my own money. So if you are looking to make money as a fresh graduate, job hunting won’t be the answer. It would only limit your potentials and capabilities.
When the jobs aren’t coming, it is up to you to think out of the box. Majority of graduates are too dependent on the idea of “go to school, graduate and get a good job.” When the job fails to come around, they become idea-locked, and frustration sets in. This is something I want my fresh graduate readers to avoid.
I have shown you how to make money as a fresh graduate in Nigeria, but I won’t be the one to implement it for you. You just have to stand up and become proactive. Until I drop another blog post, I wish you the best in your hustle.
